Short Documentary Competition & Training for Balkan-based filmmakers

DokuFest is pleased to set out its call for Balkan-based filmmakers to make 10 to 15 minute documentaries on the theme of HUMAN RIGHTS. We are looking for original and innovative approach to the theme and we also want to encourage filmmakers to reflect on the theme through Kosovo stories, wherever possible.

12 ideas will be short-listed on the basis of the proposal and supporting materials. In the following weeks they will be developed and honed further through intensive one-week workshop so that they can be pitched to a panel of experts who will commission the final 6 projects.

The 6 selected will receive full support through in kind production & post-production facilities. The 6 selected will receive further training and mentoring over six months to create vibrant new stories interpreting the theme of HUMAN RIGHTS in individual ways. The films are intended for broadcast in two of Kosovo’s national TV’s and festivals and to be delivered by March 2012.

Who can apply?

The scheme aims to bridge the gap between training/graduation and a first broadcast by offering the opportunity to work closely with experts from documentary field. We are especially interested in filmmakers from diverse and under-represented backgrounds and will encourage working in mixed nationality teams.

We will be running intensive workshops to develop your project – if you are selected you must make a commitment to attend the training sessions. Funds are available to all those traveling to Prizren. Please email Veton at for more info.

Wider Benefit - open to non-participants

We also host master classes and screenings in Prizren by internationally recognised speakers and filmmakers from the industry, which are open to all filmmakers. Details of those events will be available on Highlights of these events will be available via online streaming.

Proposals should be 2 pages in length at the most. They should start with a short description (premise) of the film, then follow with a slightly lengthier description of the idea with notes on research, access, character, visual style etc and, if you know this already, brief information on the collaborators you would like to work with. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a team in place.

We are looking for strong visual ideas with cinematic scope. Can you imagine watching them on the big screen? If you are short listed there will be time to hone the proposal for your final pitch, but initially well written, clear proposals with a creative approach, real vision and a feel for story will stand out.

While we like distinctive and ambitious ideas, make sure your project is realistic in respect of length (10 to 15 min), production limitations (shooting from November 2011 through January 2012) and financial considerations.
