Hammam (Old Turkish bath) museum - Prizren 25 August – 10 September 2005
Dokuphoto, annually exhibition of documentary photography will take place in Hammam museum in Prizren from August 25 until September 10. In its third edition this year, Dokuphoto is being organized at the same place as previous years and around same time, that is prior to the biggest cultural event in town, "Dokufest"-International Documentary and Short film festival. Its main aim is to promote and popularize the art of photography through the work of known and acclaimed photographers. It has already gained reputation among photographers and photo editors as a place to be. This years main program will be focused on British photojournalism and will be presented by the work of four top authors: Paul Lowe, Andrew Testa, George Georgiou, and Vanessa Winship , all of them winners of "World Press Photo" one of the most prestigious awards in the world of photojournalism. Thanks to the growing interest for photography, organizers will stage another exhibition of two young and inspiring photographers; Hungarian photographer Balazs Gardi, www.gardi.hu who was a 2002 World Press Photo winner in Sports category and American photographer Kael Alford. Balazs Gardi will exhibit his recent work from Afghanistan and his work can be seen often in Hungarian edition of National Geographic. Kael Alford will showcase a extraordinary work from Iraq, part of a joint exhibition with other photographers and filmmakers called "Iraq uncensored" which will be on display this summer in the U.S.A. Also in collaboration with daily newspaper "Express" Dokuphoto will stage the exhibition of best pictures from their talented team of photographers. Paul Lowe, www.grazianeri.com, www.panos.co.uk is five times winner of World Press Photo. His other awards include two Alfred Eisenstadt awards in the U.S.A., Nikon News photographer and Photo essay of Year, UK Magazine Photographer of the Year, First place Global news picture in Picture of the Year for pictures from Grozny in 1996, and Nikon Features Photographer among others. He was awarded Vic Odden prize for an outstanding achievement by a British photographer under 35 by the Royal Photographic Society. Paul has extensive experience in teaching and running workshops and seminars for photojournalists, especially in Balkans.He is curently developing an on-line educational programme for photographers in the developing world in conjuction with the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam. George Georgiou, www.georgegeorgiou.net, www.panos.co.uk, will present in Prizren the work from his native Cyprus, part of a long term project called "Between the lines", an interesting look at people caught between divided communities or ideologies. He has started the work in Kosovo and its follow up from Serbia where he was based for year and half won him his first World Press Award. The story on Istanbul bombing won him first prize in Pictures of the Year International in U.S.A. George Georgiou has recently won its second World Press Photo Award and will exhibit in the prestigious Oude Kerk gallery in Amsterdam during April to be followed by London show later this year. He is a regular contributor to publications such as Observer, Newsweek, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, Stern etc. George is currently based in Istanbul and is represented by U.K agency Panos pictures. Vanessa Winship, www.vanessawinship.com, will present her work titled "Journeys from the Balkans to the Black Sea" part of which are themes called "Albanian landscape", "Georgia" and "Hamsi". Vanessa Winship was awarded World Press Photo in Arts stories category in 1998. She has received honorable mention for "Albanian landscape" in Oscar Barnack competition and her work was screened at "Recontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles" in 2003. Also exhibited in Leica Gallery in Solms, Germany in January 2004. Vanessa is currently living and working in Istanbul,Turkey. Andrew Testa, www.panos.co.uk, is well known in Prizren and Kosovo as he had been living between Prishtina, London and New York for some time now and has exhibited in Dokuphoto earlier. His work appears regularly in Observer, Times, Newsweek, The Guardian, Mare, etc. Two times winner of World Press Photo, Andrew was also awarded Nikon Photo Essay Award as well as News Photographer of the Year in 1997 for his coverage of the Environmental Road Protest Movement in Britain. He will be exhibiting his most recent work from Thailand, shot for German weekly Mare titled "The Moken" for which he received Award of Excellence in this years Picture of the Year International. Andrew is currently working as a photo editor in daily "Express" and is sharing his time beetwen New York and Prishtina.
